The growing interest in chemical-free food production has driven strong demand for Marrone Bio Innovations (MBI), which makes natural, organic pesticides. Organic pesticides are derived entirely from fermented microbes and plant extracts that can target and control pests without harming the environment, people or other species.

If there’s a downside to strong growth, however, it’s the strain put on existing resources. Marrone Bio has 100 employees, including CFO Jim Boyd. And Boyd would much rather spend more money on scaling the business than on hiring additional finance staff—or having a large IT department to run corporate finance.
